Media personality Ola Michael has reiterated his position on how church tithes should be used, stressing that they are not intended for welfare support or social expenses such as funerals.
Speaking on UTV’s United Showbiz on Saturday April 25, he explained that tithing is based on trust and should not be subjected to strict record-keeping, arguing that doing so changes its original purpose.
“Tithing is something that is trusting, so we don’t keep records. When you keep records, you’re moving them from the original purpose to a new purpose, which is wrong,” he said.
Ola Michael maintained that tithes are primarily meant to support church growth, operations, and evangelism rather than serve as a welfare fund for members.
“Tithes are not meant to be used as a fund for occasions or for the welfare of members. We don’t use it to support funerals,” he stated.
He added that churches should instead create separate welfare systems to support members in need, often structured through groups such as men’s, women’s, and youth associations.
“In some churches, they don’t do their welfare in general. They put them into groups… so if there’s an issue, they use the group funds to support,” he explained.
His comments come as discussions around church financial practices continue, following a resurfaced video of a Methodist Church member questioning how tithes are managed by church leaders.
