A gunman identified as 46-year-old Tyler Brown opened fire on passing vehicles along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on Monday [May 11] afternoon, leaving two people critically injured in a random shooting attack near Harvard University and MIT.
Authorities said Brown, who was reportedly on probation, fired more than 50 rounds from an assault-style rifle at vehicles while standing in the roadway.
The two victims, both motorists, sustained life-threatening injuries and were rushed to hospital.
The attack ended after a Massachusetts State Police trooper and a licensed civilian, identified as a former Marine, confronted and shot Brown, who was later taken into custody with serious injuries.
Brown now faces multiple charges, including armed assault with intent to murder and firearms offenses.
Officials revealed he had previously pleaded guilty to shooting at two Boston police officers in 2020 and was still serving probation at the time of the attack.
Investigators say no motive has been established and there is no known connection between Brown and the victims. The shooting, which occurred near prominent academic institutions, briefly forced a nearby elementary school into lockdown as police secured the area.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over how Brown was able to access a weapon despite his violent criminal history and probation status.
