We judged Alexx Ekubo before we understood his silence [Article]

The death of popular Nigerian actor and entertainer Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, widely known as Chief Ikuku, has left many people shocked, heartbroken and reflective.

For some fans, it was the loss of a celebrity. For others, it felt strangely personal.

I fall into the second category.

No, I never met him. We never spoke. But like many people across Africa, I followed his journey from afar for years and genuinely admired the energy he brought into people’s lives. There was a period in my own life when I needed distraction from reality, and strangely enough, Alexx Ekubo’s social media page became one of those places that brought lightness to heavy days.

Together with his close friends, IK Ogbonna and Yomi Casual, they proudly lived what they called the “Chop Life Gang” lifestyle, luxury trips, expensive fashion, jokes, parties, laughter and endless banter. To outsiders, it looked glamorous and carefree. But beyond the flashy lifestyle, Alexx always came across as humble, funny, hardworking and deeply loved by the people around him.

You could never be bored on his page.

What stood out most to me was his humour. He had the kind of personality that could make people laugh without trying too hard. Yet, looking back now, there were moments his silence quietly revealed what his smile refused to say publicly.

When Alexx announced his engagement to Nigerian-American model and entrepreneur Fancy Acholonu in 2021, many fans celebrated with him. It looked like a beautiful new chapter. But when the relationship ended just months before the wedding, the internet turned brutal almost instantly.

There were endless opinions, assumptions, mockery and damaging narratives. Old rumours about his sexuality resurfaced again. Social media users dissected his private life as though they personally owned it. And through all that noise, one thing remained striking, Alexx barely defended himself publicly.

He simply went quiet.

At first, it was subtle. Fewer posts. Less consistency. Less of the vibrant Alexx people were used to. The few times he appeared online, he smiled, joked and acted normal. But behind those appearances, something always felt emotionally withdrawn.

Then came the complete disappearance.

His final Instagram post in December 2024 became, unknowingly, a silent goodbye.

For nearly two years, fans kept checking his page, hoping for a comeback post, a random video, a funny caption or even just reassurance that he was okay. Instead, the heartbreaking news arrived on May 11, 2026, Alexx Ekubo had died at age 40 after reportedly battling advanced metastatic kidney cancer privately.

Forty.

The age at which many people say life begins.

What makes the story even more emotional is the revelation that he reportedly kept his illness extremely private, confiding in only a few people, including his mother and wife. The mention of a wife after his passing surprised many because the public never knew he had married or settled down privately.

And honestly, that says a lot.

Sometimes public humiliation changes people permanently. Sometimes being constantly judged teaches people to hide their joy, their pain, their relationships and even their suffering from the world.

Ironically, many of the same people who once mocked him online are now posting emotional tributes pretending they always cared. That contradiction perfectly captures the strange nature of social media culture today. We can be incredibly cruel to people while they are alive, then suddenly become compassionate after they are gone.

Even more disturbing is seeing some people attack Fancy Acholonu following his death, unfairly blaming her for his misfortunes. That is not only insensitive but deeply unfair. Relationships end every day, and nobody deserves to carry the burden of being blamed for another person’s illness or death.

Alexx Ekubo’s passing is painful not just because a talented actor is gone, but because his story reminds us how little we truly know about the people we watch online.

The loudest people are not always the happiest.

The funniest people are not always okay.

And the people who entertain everyone else may be fighting battles nobody sees.

Perhaps the greatest lesson from Alexx’s life and death is this: kindness matters more than online opinions ever will.

Before judging people, dragging them publicly or turning their pain into entertainment, we should remember that human beings are carrying invisible burdens every single day.

Sometimes, silence is not pride.
Sometimes, it is survival.

And sometimes, the people who disappear quietly are simply trying to heal away from the noise of the world.

May Alexx Ekubo rest peacefully, and may his story teach us to check on the quiet ones too.
