Veteran actor Fred Amugi has opened up about the loss of his only daughter, disclosing that she passed away from cancer just nine days before her 21st birthday.
Speaking in an interview with Piesie Esther on Sunday, June 21, the actor shared details of the difficult period his family endured while his daughter battled the disease.
According to Amugi, his daughter had begun working as a nurse at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital before she fell ill.
He disclosed that at the time, he was serving as director of supply at the Ministry of Finance and frequently had to leave work to accompany her to medical appointments and treatment sessions.
“My daughter died nine days before her 21st birthday,” he said while reflecting on the painful experience.
The actor explained that his daughter’s condition required constant medical attention, forcing him to spend long periods at the hospital.
He said there were occasions when they would return home only to rush back to the hospital after her condition worsened.
Amugi noted that his supervisors at work were understanding of his circumstances.
He recalled informing the minister at the time about his daughter’s illness and requesting permission to be absent whenever necessary to care for her.
He added that he even offered to have the days he missed deducted from his salary, but the request was declined.
According to him, he assumed much of the caregiving responsibility because his wife was unable to obtain the flexibility needed from her employer.
The veteran actor further recounted receiving a call while attending lectures at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), informing him that his daughter had been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital.
Upon arriving at the facility, he was informed that she had passed away.
Despite the loss, Amugi said he accepted the situation and did not question God.
He explained that although he loved his daughter deeply, he believed God loved her even more.
Reflecting on his journey as a father, the actor described himself as a present parent who took responsibility for caring and providing for his family.
