‘I’ve lost sight in one eye’ – Maame Gyanwaa opens up about painful health battle

Veteran Kumawood actress Mavis Yeboah, popularly known as Maame Gyanwaa, has disclosed that she has completely lost sight in one eye and now spends about GH¢6,000 every month to preserve the vision in her other eye.

Speaking on Cook with Empress Gifty, which aired on Sunday, July 26, 2026, the actress recounted that her ordeal began after she sought treatment for malaria at a hospital.

According to Maame Gyanwaa, she had experienced severe chills and was diagnosed with malaria after undergoing medical tests.

She was subsequently given a series of three injections but said her vision suddenly became blurred after receiving the final dose.

“The nurse said I would receive three injections, but after the third one, my vision suddenly became dim. I told her what was happening, but she assured me I would be fine. When I got home and tried watching television, I realised I could no longer see clearly.”

The actress said she later visited an eye clinic, where doctors diagnosed pressure in her eyes and prescribed medication.

However, she claimed the treatment worsened her condition, prompting her to seek further medical care elsewhere.

She was subsequently referred from Emmanuel Eye Clinic to St. Thomas Eye Hospital but said the cost of treatment was beyond her means.

She later visited Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but was unable to receive immediate care because the specialists were away on training.

As her condition deteriorated, Maame Gyanwaa travelled to Agogo in search of treatment but was referred again to the Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital after doctors there indicated they did not have the required specialist.

At Okomfo Anokye, she said doctors informed her that one eye had already been severely damaged and that treatment would focus on saving the remaining eye.

“The doctors told me they had to save my remaining eye because the other had been severely damaged. I have completely lost sight in one eye and now rely on the other, but even that isn’t as strong as it used to be.”

Maame Gyanwaa revealed that the medication for her condition costs GH¢5,105, while each treatment session requires an additional GH¢550, excluding transportation expenses.

She said she now spends approximately GH¢6,000 every month in an effort to preserve the vision she has left.
