A 29-year-old teacher, Tiekan Joseph, has embarked on a bicycle journey from Jirapa in the Upper West Region to Accra to raise awareness about drug and substance abuse among young people.
Mr. Tiekan, a teacher at Hausakope Presbyterian Primary School in the Sene East District of the Bono East Region, says the journey is aimed at encouraging young people to shun drugs and other harmful substances and make choices that will protect their future.
He is also using the journey to call for greater public education on the dangers of drug and substance abuse, particularly among the youth.
Beyond the anti-drug campaign, Mr. Tiekan is advocating safer and better roads across the country, with particular emphasis on the speedy completion of the Wa–Techiman road project.
According to him, completing the road will improve road safety while facilitating movement and boosting economic activities along the route.
Mr. Tiekan began his current journey in Jirapa on August 1, 2026, after participating in the Bong-ngo Festival.
His decision to use cycling for advocacy was inspired by an earlier journey in April, when he cycled from Yeji in the Bono East Region to the Upper West Region to generate publicity for the festival.
He later cycled through Nadowli, Babile and Konzokala before returning to Jirapa as part of his campaign against drug and substance abuse.
Mr. Tiekan says the journey to Accra is more than a cycling adventure, describing it as an awareness campaign aimed at inspiring young people to use their talents and interests to promote positive causes in their communities.
