Ghanaian poet and spoken word artiste, Rhyme Sonny has bemoaned an attitude of Ghanaian musicians he describes as worrying.
The poet who started his trade as a songwriter told Ghana Weekend TV that the act of songwriting is critical but most Ghanaian musicians don’t take it seriously.
He indicated that there are people who are more experienced in the art of songwriting but their services are not appreciated by most musicians.
“Most of the musicians today don’t want people to write songs for them. I have approached a countless number of young musicians with the belief that with the good songwriting skills that I have, I would be able to help them produce structured songs,” he said.
He said one of the reasons they turn him down is probably because they want to express themselves just the way they feel.
“I have countless songs that I have written. Sometimes, you can imagine an artiste’s style and call the artiste that you have written a song with them in mind but they’ll not express interest in it,” he said.
He mentioned Kwaboah, Okyeame Kwame, Obibini, Sarkodie, Asem, Guru, Akan, Worlasi, Flowking Stone as some Ghanaian artistes who have good songwriting skills.
Rhyme Sonny also noted that he bent on taking songwriting more seriously.
“I have actually picked a form at MUSIGA to register as a songwriter and I’m looking forward to joining the Ghana Songwriters Association,” he added.
Rhyme Sonny is one of the few successful spoken word artistes in Ghana. He has performed at most of the big events in and outside the country.
