Is Ghanaian producer Appiah Dankwah, known in music circles as Appietus, trying to lay claim to the ownership of the Amapiano music genre?
Well, he has said in a new interview on TV XYZ that he brought amapiano to Ghana
Appietus said that the Muje Baya song he produced for 5Five in 2011 is amapiano, but he added a Ghanaian touch to it.
“I introduced their so-called amapiano [to Ghana]. ‘Muje Baya’ is amapiano, but I re-fixed it to a Ghanaian vibe. So whoever listens to muje baya will feel the South African vibe but in a different way… you need to bring it down. Cos if you hear reggae songs you will automatically know where it’s coming from, you can’t take genres from its owners”, he told Agyengo on TV XYZ’s ‘Legend.’
The beat of ‘Muje Baya’ was sampled from South African song ‘Amerido’ by DJ Cyndo. ‘Amerido’ was released in 2009 – three years before Amapiano emerged from South Africa. How then could he claim he brought something that did not exist as of 2011 to Ghana?
Appietus also said he was disappointed in the Ghanaian music industry for changing music genres over the years and not having a music identity.
