Gospel singer Diana Hopeson has opened up about the physical abuse and death threats she endured during her first marriage, revealing that she eventually fled after her husband threatened to shoot both her and himself.
The former Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) president, the first and only woman to hold the position, made the disclosure in an interview with media personality Kafui Dey.
According to Diana, the abuse became so severe that she was beaten with a belt and left bleeding from the mouth, while her husband also threatened to crash their car and later made arrangements to obtain a gun.
She said the turning point came when she realised her life was in danger and decided to leave the marriage for good.
“I was like, no, I need to run for my life,” she recalled.
Diana explained that she initially struggled to understand her husband’s behaviour because she was unaware that he was experiencing a mental health crisis, later identified as bipolar disorder.
She disclosed that she sought help from church leaders and relatives but continued to endure the situation until she escaped after another violent assault.
“I was bleeding from my mouth. It was just too much,” she recounted.
Although she has since found healing, Diana said the experience left lasting emotional scars, including being easily startled by doors opening and feeling intense pain whenever she heard her former husband’s name.
She credited God for helping her heal and forgiving him, saying, “I thank God for healing.”
