Profile of late acclaimed Ghanaian author Ama Ata Aidoo

Acclaimed  Ghananain author, poet, playwright, and academic Ama Ata Aidoo has died.

Born in real life as Christina Ama Aidoo on March 23, 1942, Ama Ata Aidoo died at the age of 81 on Wednesday, May 31,2023.

The death of the celebrated Ghanaian author was confirmed by her family in a press statement:

 “The Family of Prof. Ama Ata Aidoo with deep sorrow but in the hope of the resurrection, informs the general public that our beloved relative and writer passed away in the early hours of this morning Wednesday 31st May 2023, after a short illness.

“Funeral arrangements would be announced in due course. The Family requests privacy at this difficult moment,” Family head Kwamena Essandoh Aidoo announced in a short statement.”

The late Ama Ata Aidoo was widely regarded as one of Africa’s leading literary figures and a prominent feminist voice within African literature.

Aidoo was born in Abeadzi Kyiakor, a small village in the central region of Ghana. She obtained her early education in Ghana and later pursued higher education in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Aidoo received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Ghana and completed her Master’s degree in African Studies at the University of Ghana.

She furthered her studies at the University of London, earning a Diploma in English Studies.

Aidoo’s writing career began in the 1960s, and she quickly gained recognition for her powerful and insightful works that explored themes of gender, identity, and African culture.

Her debut novel, “Our Sister Killjoy” (1977), received critical acclaim and is considered a seminal work of African feminist literature.

The novel tells the story of a young Ghanaian woman’s journey to Europe and her experiences of alienation and disillusionment.

In addition to her novels, Aidoo has also written numerous plays, poems, and short stories.

Some of her notable plays include “Anowa” (1970), “The Dilemma of a Ghost” (1965), and “The Marriage of Anansewa” (1975).

Her poetry collections include “Someone Talking to Sometime” (1986) and “An Angry Letter in January and Other Poems” (1992).
