The head honcho of Mavin Records,Don Jazzy has revealed why he did not sign Wizkid and Davido to his former record label, Mo’ Hits.
In a podcast interview with Fisayo Fosudo, Don Jazzy said that he would have loved to sign Wizkid, but Banky W’s EME label got to him first. He also said that he had the opportunity to sign Davido, but he figured that the “Assurance” hitmaker would be fine on his own.
Don Jazzy also listed other talented singers that he regrets not signing, including Simi, Teni, and Falz. He said that it is difficult to sign every talented artist, as it takes a lot of money and resources to develop them.
“At the end of the day, you cannot sign every artiste,” Don Jazzy said. “If I see an artiste now that I like, off the top of my head I am thinking (of spending) fifty to a hundred million in one year to actually get to somewhere. There is a lot of work and there are some of artistes on your roster already.”
Despite not signing Wizkid and Davido, Don Jazzy has built a successful record label with Mavin Records.
The label has produced some of the biggest stars in Nigerian music, including Tiwa Savage, Rema, and Johnny Drille.
It is clear that Don Jazzy has a keen eye for talent, and he is still one of the most influential figures in the Nigerian music industry. It will be interesting to see who he signs next.
