Nigeria dominated the nominations for the inaugural Grammy Award for Best African Music Performance, with four artists shortlisted.
The nominees include Asake & Olamide for “Amapiano,” Burna Boy for “City Boys,” Davido ft. Musa key for “Unavailable,” and Ayra Starr for “Rush.” South Africa’s Tyla is the only non-Nigerian artist nominated in the category, for her song “Water.”
The nominations were announced on November 10, 2023, and Ghanaian artists were notably absent from the list.
The new category was created to recognize outstanding recordings that incorporate unique local expressions from various African regions.
