The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Ladies Club has launched a nationwide initiative to revitalize domestic tourism in female secondary schools.

As part of this project, the club, comprised of alumnae from various girls’ schools, visited Accra Girls Senior High School on Friday, September 20, 2024, to revamp their Tourism Club.

During their visit, the GTA Ladies Club met with over 200 Accra Girls Senior High School Tourism Club members. The Club provided them with training and resources to enhance their knowledge and skills in the tourism industry.

Speaking to Channel One TV, the President of the Club Rev. Mrs. Francisca Gift Kuukuwah Yanneyba Boakye encouraged the students to consider careers in the field.

“As part of Tourism Month, we organized a ‘Rep Your School’ campaign to visit girls’ schools and revitalize their tourism clubs..Our goal is to encourage everyone in Ghana to embrace domestic tourism, not only as a means of leisure but also as a potential career path.”

The leader urged both male and female students to cultivate a passion for tourism and explore the opportunities it offers.

The theme for the project is Promoting and Sustaining Domestic Tourism Through Second-Cycle Institutions.

Several dignitaries, including Kakra Kofi Attah Kusi, Deputy Director of Domestic Marketing at the GTA, and Mrs. Adeline Boateng, Ex-Staff Association, GTA, graced the gathering.

Speaking as the main speaker, Mrs Adeline Boateng disclosed, “Big countries like the USA, India, China, and Brazil are popular domestic tourism destinations. Lately, South Africa has also found itself on the pitch. Domestic spending on tourism has propelled many economies to get to the top so why not Ghana?”

“Much as we need foreign exchange earnings from international tourism, which helps the economy through the multiplier effect, there is the need to focus on domestic tourism also to propel overall growth within the country.” She added

Complimenting the work of the GTA Ladies Club, Mr Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi reiterated the Authority’s domestic marketing campaigns “See Ghana, EAT Ghana, Wear Ghana and Feel Ghana” as well as “Experience Ghana, Share Ghana”.

He noted that the formation of tourist clubs in the country will help boost domestic Tourism referring to the 2023 tourism report data of 1.1 million tourists visiting various Tourism establishments,  tourist sites and attractions,  etc culminating in a corresponding revenue of 3.8 billion dollars

He explained extensively that Tourism Private Sector Trade Associations such as the Tourism Society of Ghana (TOSOGHA) and the Kids in Tourism are also complimenting the work of the GTA by pushing the formation of the clubs at the basic, senior high ànd Tertiary Levels.
