Music producer Fred Kyei Mensah has shared the story behind how the late Highlife legend Daddy Lumba got his name.
He revealed this during an interview on The Chat with Ekow Koomson on Channel One TV on Saturday July 26.
According to Fredyma, the name “Lumba” came from Patrice Lumumba, a famous African leader from Congo. While in school, Charles Kojo Fosu (Daddy Lumba’s real name) was part of a choir that sang a song about Lumumba. The song made a strong impression on him.
“The song about Patrice Lumumba stayed with him,” Mensah said. “It symbolised strength, leadership, and purpose—qualities that mirrored his own journey.”
Later, Charles chose “Lumba” as his stage name. He eventually added “Daddy” to show maturity and fatherhood, becoming the popular artiste known as Daddy Lumba. His name would go on to become a major part of Ghana’s Highlife music history.
