The family of the late highlife legend, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has refuted claims made by former Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah, regarding the musician’s marriage.
The former MP is reported to have said that determining who qualifies as a widow was the sole prerogative of the deceased’s family, not the court.
In a statement jointly issued by Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh, widow of the musician, and his elder sister, Ms. Ernestina Fosuh, dated Friday October 10, the family described the comments made by Collins Amankwah during a recent interview on Peace FM as misleading, shocking, and disappointing.
According to the family, the former lawmaker’s remarks reflected a serious misunderstanding of marital law, particularly his attempt to equate ordinance marriage with customary marriage, an error they said should not come from someone with legislative experience.
“Such an error should not be made by someone with legislative experience,” the statement said, adding that they expected the former MP to “speak with knowledge, care, and respect for the law.”
The statement further clarified that Daddy Lumba was a German citizen and was legally married to Mrs. Akosua Serwah Fosuh under German civil law.
It explained that under German law, a legally married person cannot enter into another marriage, whether traditional, customary, or otherwise ,anywhere in the world, unless the existing union has been lawfully dissolved.
The family therefore urged the public, and particularly Mr. Amankwah, to refrain from spreading misinformation about the late musician’s personal life, stressing that such claims only distort the truth and disrespect his memory.
