Fetty Wap transferred to home confinement after early release

American rapper Fetty Wap — born Willie Junior Maxwell II — has unexpectedly been released from federal prison, marking a dramatic turn in a legal saga that has stretched nearly five years.

The 34-year-old artiste, once a chart-topping figure in hip-hop, stepped into community confinement in early January after serving just over half of a six-year sentence for drug trafficking-related offences.

Maxwell began serving his term at a low-security federal facility in Minnesota following a guilty plea in 2022 on charges tied to the distribution of narcotics, including cocaine, fentanyl and heroin.

Prosecutors detailed how members of his network shipped controlled substances across state lines, a case that formed the basis of his sentencing in 2023.

Rather than remaining behind bars until late 2026, authorities transferred him on January 7, 2026 to home confinement in Philadelphia, where he will serve the remainder of his sentence under strict supervision. Federal guidelines typically allow for such transitions once a prisoner has met eligibility criteria for early release and halfway-house placement.

In a message shared through social media and publicists, Fetty Wap expressed heartfelt gratitude to supporters for their loyalty during his incarceration. He framed his return to the community as a chance to make positive contributions, particularly focusing on initiatives that support underserved youth , from education and technology training to vision care for children.

Despite this early release, Maxwell’s freedom is not without conditions. Under terms of his supervised release — expected to last several years — he faces regular drug testing, financial disclosure requirements and limits on new financial accounts, among other monitoring measures imposed by probation officials.

Fetty Wap’s rise to fame in the mid-2010s was meteoric. He became a defining voice in hip-hop with string of hits like “Trap Queen,” “679” and “My Way,” earning multi-platinum success as an independent artist. His legal troubles, however, brought significant disruption to that ascent.

As he transitions from confinement back into public life, fans and industry watchers alike are now keeping an open eye whether a musical comeback might follow. For now, the rapper’s focus appears to be on fulfilling the obligations of his supervised release while rebuilding his legacy and personal life outside prison walls.
