Ghana should soon witness the commencement of renovation works on the National Theatre, according to Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Dzifa Abla Gomashie.
Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on on Citi Eyewitness News on Tuesday January 13, the Minister disclosed that preparations are underway to begin rehabilitation of the iconic arts facility, which has faced years of infrastructural deterioration.
She clarified that the reported US$30 million allocation to the creative arts sector will not be used exclusively for the National Theatre project.
According to her, the funding sourced from a Chinese facility is intended to support broader sectoral development, with only a portion earmarked for the Theatre’s renovation.
Minister Gomashie further revealed that government efforts extend beyond Accra, noting that work is ongoing to complete and operationalise other events centres across various regions of the country.
She emphasised that these initiatives form part of a wider strategy to decentralise arts and cultural infrastructure and stimulate creative activity nationwide.
The anticipated renovation of the National Theatre is expected to restore its status as a premier hub for performing arts while complementing regional investments aimed at strengthening Ghana’s cultural and creative economy.
