Media personality and music industry commentator MC Portfolio has appealed to the board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) to broaden the criteria used in assessing the impact of songs, urging them not to rely solely on digital streaming numbers.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Dadzie on Hitz FM on Monday, January 19, 2026, MC Portfolio argued that while digital platforms have become important, they do not fully capture the true reach and influence of music in Ghana.
According to him, songs should be judged based on their “on-ground effect” , that is, how well they resonate with listeners beyond streaming platforms such as Spotify.
“We should not only look at digital streams. There are people who are not on Spotify or other platforms but still actively consume music,” he said. “We need to find a place to measure the impact of music beyond just streams. The on-ground effect of songs should be factored in.”
MC Portfolio acknowledged that the dynamics of music consumption have changed over the years, particularly with the rise of the digital era, but warned against overlooking audiences who engage with music through traditional and informal channels.
“In as much as we are trying to over-digitalise things, there is still a disconnect,” he noted, adding that relying solely on digital metrics could leave out a significant portion of music consumers.
During the interview, MC Portfolio was also asked about his support for artistes ahead of this year’s TGMA, following his vocal backing of King Paluta last year.
He revealed that he would not actively campaign for any artiste this time around, explaining that his past support was done voluntarily and not as part of any official stakeholder or management engagement.
“Over time, I’ve done it voluntarily,” he said, adding that any future involvement would depend on proper stakeholder and management engagement.
