Ghanaian-American singer Amaarae has opened up about why her acclaimed album, BLACK STAR, includes few or in some cases, no Ghanaian collaborators, revealing the challenges she faced while trying to work with Ghanaian artistes.
In an interview with Sincerely Accra Podcast monitored by Ghana Weekend on Tuesday January 20, Amaarae discussed several attempts to feature Ghanaian talent on the project. She revealed that Ara The Jay had recorded a verse for her track FreeTheYouth, but it ultimately didn’t make the cut.
“Ara The Jay had a verse on FreeTheYouth which didn’t make it because we had to go back on notes. But I love Ara. it just didn’t go how I wanted it to go,” she explained.
Amaarae also shared her efforts to collaborate with dancehall star Shatta Wale. “I DMed Shatta Wale like 50 times, and he only replied a few days ago. I wanted us to do a new record together since I was coming to Ghana and actually see how a Shatta Wale and Amaarae collab could work,” she said, noting that the timing didn’t allow the collaboration to materialise.
The singer further revealed that she reached out to Producers such as Gaffachi and Nshona Music but they were unable to align due to one reason or the other.
Despite these challenges, Amaarae emphasised that her decisions were driven by her artistic vision.
“I made the efforts but at the end of the day, The Blackstar Album was my interpretation of where I see the future of Ghanaian music,” she said.
