The University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of one of its students, Nelson Blay Nokotey, a Level 300 Top-Up Journalism student, who lost his life after being knocked down by a vehicle at the 335 highway, close to the school’s campus.

In a statement issued on Thursday January 22, 2026, the university described the incident as a painful and untimely loss that has plunged the entire UniMAC community into mourning and disbelief.

According to the release, management, on behalf of the Governing Council, faculty, staff, and students, extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and loved ones of the late student, describing him as a valued and promising member of the UniMAC family whose passing is not only a loss to the university but to the nation at large.

Following the incident, UniMAC management, led by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eric Opoku Mensah, has met formally with the bereaved family and also engaged separately with the Students’ Representative Council and the wider student body to commiserate with them and reaffirm the institution’s solidarity during the difficult period.

The university further disclosed that it is working closely with the Ghana Police Service through its representatives, including the Dean of Students Affairs and the Chief Security Officer, to support ongoing investigations aimed at identifying, apprehending, and prosecuting the perpetrator responsible for the incident.

UniMAC described the incident as a grave violation of the sanctity of human life and assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies until justice is served.

Beyond the immediate response, management says it has re-engaged relevant state and municipal authorities, including security agencies, transport and road safety authorities, and local government institutions, to review and implement enhanced road safety measures, particularly within and around the South Legon community, to prevent future occurrences.

“These actions are aimed at protecting students, staff, and residents, and ensuring that they can live, move, and learn in safety,” the statement said.

The university has also appealed to students, staff, and the general public to remain calm, law-abiding, and cooperative as investigations continue, while honouring the memory of the late Nelson Blay Nokotey with dignity and restraint.

UniMAC concluded by giving a solemn assurance that it will not relent in its pursuit of justice and in implementing concrete safety measures to safeguard lives, stressing that Nelson’s life mattered and that his memory will remain firmly etched in the conscience of the university community.
