Nigerian singer Simi has addressed criticism following the resurfacing of old tweets from 2012 about children which recently went viral.
The controversy comes shortly after her outspoken remarks on sexual assault where she called out societal excuses and the culture of fear surrounding the abuse of women.
The old tweets referenced a four-year-old boy at her mother’s daycare describing playful interactions that some social media users found concerning. Many questioned the content and its intent, sparking online debate.
Reacting to the backlash Simi clarified that she was not famous at the time and explained that the posts reflected her everyday experiences helping at her mother’s daycare. She stressed that the tweets were intended to capture the innocence and playful nature of children, not anything inappropriate.
“The posts were simply a way of sharing cute and funny moments from my daily life back then,” Simi said. “There was no ill intention, and they should not be seen as anything perverse.”
The singer added that while the tweets could be interpreted differently, they were never meant to cause harm or discomfort. She also revealed that her team has since deleted some of the posts to protect her family’s privacy.
Simi’s clarification underscores the challenges public figures face in the digital age, where past content can resurface and be scrutinized, sometimes in contrast to their more recent advocacy work.
