‘Mr. Tendernism’ wins back viral barbecue name

Walter ‘Mr. Tendernism’ Johnson is entering a new chapter after securing control of the brand name that made him a viral barbecue sensation.

The phrase ‘Tendernism,’ widely used to describe barbecue so tender the meat falls off the bone, was at the centre of a growing dispute involving Johnson, a restaurant he helped make famous, and other parties who filed claims to the name.

Now, the man fans affectionately call ‘Unc’ appears to have regained control of the brand, turning what began as a controversy into a major comeback story.

Johnson first gained national attention through energetic barbecue videos filmed while he worked at Destination Smokehouse in California.

In those clips, he demonstrated his signature “tenderness test,” enthusiastically declaring “that’s Tendernism!” as racks of ribs or brisket fell apart with ease.

The phrase quickly spread across TikTok, Instagram, and X, turning Johnson into a recognisable internet personality and bringing massive attention to the restaurant.

As the videos went viral and the phrase became a recognisable brand, questions about ownership soon followed.

Multiple parties—including the restaurant’s parent company and an outside attorney—filed trademark claims connected to the word ‘Tendernism.’

At one stage, public trademark filings suggested the restaurant had moved to secure rights to the phrase for merchandise and restaurant services, despite Johnson being widely viewed by fans as the person who created and popularised the term.

The situation sparked online backlash and opened broader conversations about creators, ownership, and the value of viral culture.

Following the dispute, Johnson parted ways with the restaurant that had helped launch his online fame.

Supporters rallied behind him on social media, arguing that the personality behind the phrase should control the brand associated with it. The latest developments indicate that Johnson has now secured control of the “Tendernism” name, a move supporters say restores ownership of the viral phrase to the man who made it famous.

With the brand now in his hands, Johnson is looking towards building his own independent food venture. Fans have already begun supporting efforts to help him launch a food truck and eventually a restaurant under the Tendernism name. Johnson has also hinted at expanding the brand through social media content, barbecue events, and merchandise tied to the phrase that helped turn him into a viral star.

What started as a spontaneous shout over perfectly cooked ribs has grown into a brand with real business potential. For Johnson, reclaiming the “Tendernism” name represents more than a legal victory—it marks the beginning of a new phase where the personality behind the viral moment now controls the future of the brand he helped create
