Musician Camidoh has thrown his support behind Wendy Shay for the Artiste of the Year award at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
Speaking in an interview on Hitz FM on Tuesday, April 7, Camidoh acknowledged that while the TGMA race can be unpredictable, Wendy Shay’s hard work makes her a deserving contender.
“I’m not too in-depth when it comes to the year and the reviews and releases, but I think everyone deserves it,” he said. “But trust me, Wend Shay deserves it. She really does.”
Though he admitted he does not closely analyse yearly outputs, the ‘Sugarcane’ hitmaker stressed that Wendy Shay stands out for her consistency and resilience.
He also referenced comments by Black Sherif, agreeing that Wendy Shay has not received enough recognition for her contributions to the industry.
“I saw a Black Sherif interview where he said Wendy Shay wasn’t given her flowers enough. I agree,” he noted.
He further highlighted the challenges female artistes face in maintaining relevance at the top.
“It’s hard to really be on top as a female. It’s really hard,” he added.
Drawing from personal experience, Camidoh disclosed that he once had a conversation with Bullet, Wendy Shay’s manager, where he observed the level of work and strategy invested in building her brand.
“You see how much work they’re putting in, so for sure, Wendy—she deserves it,” he said.
Despite backing Wendy Shay, the singer maintained that he would support any eventual winner.
“TGMA, anything can happen. If she gets it, I’ll clap for her. Anyone else, I will still clap for them,” he stated.
Camidoh also used the moment to call for stronger representation of women in top award categories.
“We should have more women being represented and pushed to get that status all the time,” he urged.
