Musician Gyakie has disclosed that she did not initially plan to pursue music as a profession despite growing up around it.
Speaking in an interview on 3FM on Monday, May 4, Gyakie said her early exposure to music was largely influenced by her parents.
“I actually never thought I was going to do music as a profession growing up, but my mom really made me perform at home against my will so many times.”
According to Gyakie, her mother would often ask her to sing in front of visitors, sometimes using improvised props.
“If my mother had her friends over, she’d call me to come and sing… pick a bottle or body lotion and just perform in front of them. It used to annoy me a little bit, but she knew what she saw at that time,” she recounted.
She also credited her musical environment at home, particularly the influence of her father, for shaping her love for music from a young age.
“We grew up around music… seeing my father rehearse at home, being in the studio, and artistes coming in and out of the house. I was very young, but I could tell something special was going on,” she said.
Despite this exposure, Gyakie maintained that she did not consider music as a career path early on, although she remained actively involved in entertainment activities during her school years.
“I was really involved in entertainment—music, dance and acting, but I guess I didn’t pay attention to it,” she noted.
She explained that her perspective changed after releasing her first song and receiving positive feedback from listeners.
“The common thing was that my voice is really unique and the song is really nice… that’s when I started paying attention, and it felt like we were actually on a journey,” she added.
