Kuami Eugene has disclosed that he got tired of repeatedly winning the Highlife Artiste of the Year award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), explaining that he does not want his career to be defined by only one genre.
In an interview with Joy Prime on Wednesday, May 6, the award-winning artiste said that although he is widely recognised for highlife music, he creates music across several genres.
During the interview, Kuami Eugene disclosed that he received two nominations at this year’s TGMA but admitted he was not even certain about the categories he was nominated in until the host mentioned them.
When asked if he was tired of winning the highlife artiste category, Kuami Eugene replied: “I was tired two years ago because I wanted somebody to win some. Yeah, because I didn’t want to be known for just Highlife.”
According to him, his main focus is to be recognised for making quality music and not be restricted to a single genre label.
“I want to be known for producing good music,” he added.
The conversation also touched on the ongoing debate about Highlife and Afrobeats. Explaining his style, Kuami Eugene stated that he makes different kinds of music, including afrobeats, afropop, drill and dancehall.
“I make Highlife, Afrobeat, Afropop, Drill, and Dancehall music. It’s me. I make all kinds of music, but the one I’m known for, because I’ve made a couple of them, is Highlife. But I make other genres as well.”
