Ghanaian-Romanian musician Wanlov the Kubolor has weighed in on Ghana’s ongoing debate over the proposed anti-LGBTQ+ bill, claiming that financial interests rather than morality are driving support for the legislation.
Speaking in an interview on MX24 on Thursday, May 7, Wanlov said he felt compelled to speak because the bill represents what he described as a dangerous moment in Ghana’s history.
According to him, some politicians backing the bill are being influenced by foreign conservative groups.
“When I say they, I mean the homophobic sector of parliament, as well as the people that sponsor them or are behind them, which are like the Western Congress of Families from Texas,” he alleged.
Wanlov further claimed that the proposed legislation could create opportunities for profit through mass incarceration.
The musician argued that although supporters of the bill publicly frame it as a moral and religious issue, he believes financial gain is a hidden motivation.
“We’ll see on the front that it’s a moral thing, it’s about morals, but there are people raping children, there’s adultery and so many things happening in society,” he stated.
Wanlov also questioned why individuals should face imprisonment over personal lifestyles that, in his view, do not violate the rights of others.
“You can’t jail people because you disagree with their life. Then what is next?” he asked.
The anti-LGBTQ+ bill, officially known as the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, has remained one of the most controversial national conversations in Ghana, drawing mixed reactions from politicians, religious groups, activists, celebrities and international organisations.
