Veteran highlife musician Ben Brako has opened up about the inspiration behind his classic song Etuei, a track from his 1987 Baya album.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s FootPrint with Samuel Attah-Mensah on Friday, May 8, the highlife legend disclosed that the title “Etuei” is deeply rooted in the traditions of Cape Coast.
According to him, Etuei is a traditional deity associated with renewal and rebirth and plays a significant role in the famous Bakatue Festival.
“Etuei is actually a traditional god in Cape Coast, and the whole Bakatuei festival is based on Etuei. It is the god of renewal when they break the lagoon with the sea to refresh it. Otherwise, it gets stale,” he explained.
Ben Brako further noted that the symbolism behind the deity represents renewal, harvest and rebirth, themes that inspired the song.
“It is renewal, it is rebirth, it is harvest and all that. That’s why the festival is based on Etui,” he added.
The veteran musician also disclosed that some people have misunderstood the meaning behind the song due to its traditional roots.
“Yes, those who know think that I’m anti-Christ because they believe that anything to do with traditional religion is anti-Christ,” he said.
