Veteran highlife musician Ben Brako has disclosed that he has been wrongly labelled “anti-Christ” because of the traditional themes explored in his classic song Etuei.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Footprints with Samuel Attah-Mensah on Friday, May 8, the veteran musician said he has often had to explain the true meaning behind the song to people who misunderstand its message.
When asked whether he had ever explained the meaning of the song to others, Ben Brako said some listeners assume he is against Christianity because the song references traditional beliefs.
“Yes, those who know think that I’m anti-Christ. They believe that anything to do with the traditional religion is anti-Christ,” he said.
Reacting to whether such views were held by educated people, the highlife artiste answered in the affirmative.
“Oh yes, especially the educated people, because they have been indoctrinated more about it,” he noted.
Ben Brako, however, clarified that Etuei was never intended to promote anti-Christian beliefs but rather to educate people about Ghanaian culture and traditions.
“But it’s just educating people on the culture and the traditions. It’s very important,” he explained.
According to him, the song carries a deeper message about identity and self-awareness.
“When you listen to the lyrics, we are saying that you’re not satisfied with yourself and so ‘Etuei’ simply means ‘Let us go back to ourselves, let us be ourselves,'” he added.
