Black Sherif has won the Songwriter of the Year award at the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards with his emotionally charged song “Sacrifice.”
The awards ceremony, which took place from the evening of Saturday, May 9, to the early hours of Sunday, May 10, at the Accra International Conference Centre, saw the “Iron Boy” hitmaker beat strong competition from some of Ghana’s finest lyricists to claim the prestigious songwriting honour.
Black Sherif’s victory is particularly historic, as it ends Kofi Kinaata’s dominance in the category.
Kinaata had won the Songwriter of the Year award for five consecutive years, becoming one of the most celebrated songwriters in the history of the awards scheme.
“Sacrifice,” one of the standout records on Black Sherif’s 2025 album Iron Boy, has been widely praised for its deep storytelling, emotional vulnerability and themes of perseverance, pain and resilience.
The song resonates strongly with music lovers both in Ghana and beyond, earning multiple nominations at this year’s TGMA, including Best Afropop Song and Most Popular Song of the Year.

The Songwriter of the Year category featured nominees including Kofi Kinaata’s “Have Mercy II,” Akwaboah’s “Obi Nnim (Obinim),” Stonebwoy’s “Send Them a Prayer,” Ko-Jo Cue’s “Abeberese,” and Cofi Boham’s “Take Me Home.”
The win further cements Black Sherif’s reputation as one of the leading voices of his generation, known for blending raw street narratives with reflective songwriting and emotionally rich performances.
