Veteran highlife artiste Ben Brako has opened up about how his music journey began from his early school days in Accra.
Speaking in an interview with Samuel Attah-Mensah on Footprint, the celebrated musician disclosed that his love for performing started when he was still a young student at St. John’s Preparatory and Primary.
According to him, he used to sing for his fellow students around the age of 10 or 11.
“For performance music, let’s say just for argument’s sake that I used to sing to my fellow students when I was about 10 or 11 at the St. John’s Preparatory and Primary,” he recounted.
Ben Brako said his passion for music continued after he gained admission to St. Augustine’s College, where an unexpected moment helped shape his future in music.
The highlife legend disclosed that during one of the school’s entertainment nights, his elder brother informed the entertainment prefect that he could sing.
Although he was caught off guard and nervous when he was called to perform, he still gathered the courage to sing before the students.
“I was even scared, but I went and sang,” he said.
According to him, that performance left a lasting impression on many students. Three years later, when the school decided to form a band and needed a vocalist, some students remembered his performance and approached him to join.
“They came to ask me if I would love to sing. I said, ‘Oh yes.’”
Ben Brako is regarded as one of Ghana’s respected highlife voices, with decades of contribution to the country’s music industry and several timeless songs to his name.
