Hiplife and Afrobeats musician Ayigbe Edem has opened up about some of the major challenges he has faced throughout his music career, disclosing that success brought a different kind of struggle beyond his early days as an underground act.
Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on the PrimeTime show on Wednesday, May 13, Ayigbe Edem explained that as an artiste who performs largely in a minority language, he often has to work twice as hard to gain nationwide recognition.
“It’s also very difficult when you are coming from where I’m coming from, and you have to push the product because it’s a minority language, you might have to do twice the work somebody’s doing,” he said.
Edem noted that songs that become huge in his region often require extra effort and investment to break into the national space.
“I have songs that are very big in the region. But if they were Akan songs, they would be big across Ghana without the video,” he explained.
The artiste also highlighted the lack of direct mentors in his journey, saying he has had to create his own path while constantly proving his commercial value to investors and event organisers.
