Influencer Adwoa Tee has pushed back against claims that influencers do not belong at high-profile events such as the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), insisting that anyone who is celebrated and can afford access should be welcomed.
Speaking in an interview on Joy Prime, Adwoa Tee questioned the notion that influencers are not celebrities and argued that relevance in today’s media space goes beyond traditional definitions.
“I don’t know why people think influencers aren’t celebrities,” she said. “I feel like anybody who is celebrated should be able to go to grand events.”
She firmly disagreed with the criticism that influencers should not be allowed at events such as the TGMA.
“I feel like everybody should be given a chance to go where they want to. TGMA is not cheap. The tickets are not cheap. If somebody can afford to buy the tickets and go for the programme, let them do so.”
According to her, not everyone who attends such events is necessarily a celebrity, making it unfair to single out influencers for criticism.
Addressing suggestions that influencers should make more effort with their appearance at major events, Adwoa Tee reflected on her own experiences with online backlash, disclosing that criticism comes regardless of how one presents themselves.
“For somebody that has been bashed heavily, whether I dress well or I do not dress well… someone even commented, ‘Who invited her?”
She noted that such reactions show how subjective public opinion can be and stressed that hard work and visibility in the media industry deserve recognition.
“For me, I feel like anybody who works so hard, especially to show their relevance in the media space, should be celebrated,” she added.
