Actress and fashion icon Nana Akua Addo has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding fashion choices at the recent Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) red carpet, arguing that celebrities should be allowed to express themselves freely rather than be criticised for not following themes.
Speaking on United Showbiz on UTV on Saturday, May 16, the fashionista addressed backlash directed at some celebrities whose outfits were said not to have aligned with the event’s stated red carpet theme.
Known for her bold and unconventional fashion choices, Nana Akua disclosed that she has never followed a red carpet theme and has no plans of changing that approach.
“I am not someone who sticks to red carpet themes. I have never followed a theme. Because with me, I feel that fashion is a way to express yourself. And I feel like themes are like someone telling you what to do. If you say the theme is black, I will wear red because I want to be free.”
According to her, fashion should celebrate individuality and diversity rather than create restrictions or pressure people into conformity.
She explained that judging outfits at first glance can sometimes overlook the deeper inspiration behind a person’s style choices.
“In the fashion world, it is to celebrate diversity, not box you. If you get to the carpet, someone will ask you what you are wearing and why. Sometimes, what the person wears may not make sense, but when he or she explains the motivation, you will finally understand. Someone may have gone through something and wore a particular colour as a statement,” she added.
While advocating freedom of expression, Nana Akua acknowledged that guidance within the fashion industry remains important.
However, she maintained that the TGMA red carpet should not become a platform for harsh fashion judgements.
“We should allow them to express themselves, but then we should guide them. And I don’t think the TGMA is the platform to judge fashion,” she concluded.
