Film director and writer Kofi Asamoah, who is popularly known as Kofas, has expressed excitement over the newly launched Film Development Fund, describing it as a breakthrough for independent filmmakers in Ghana.
Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeekend during the launch at the Silverbird Cinema in Accra on Wednesday, May 20, Kofi Asamoah said access to funding has remained one of the biggest obstacles facing filmmakers over the years.
“This fund is really a big deal for filmmakers here in Ghana because for years our major problem as independent filmmakers has been funding,” he stated.
According to him, securing financial support for productions has consistently been a challenge for many industry players, limiting growth and opportunities within the sector.
“Financing of our films has been our biggest challenge,” he said.
Kofi Asamoah also commended the government and the National Film Authority for taking steps to establish a funding mechanism to support filmmakers, particularly independent creatives.
“To hear and to know that this current government is actually putting in place, through the National Film Authority, a fund to help filmmakers, independent filmmakers, is really a big deal for me,” he added.
The Film Development Fund forms part of efforts to strengthen Ghana’s film industry and address long-standing financing challenges and is also expected to support filmmakers, producers, distributors, exhibitors and other industry stakeholders by providing opportunities for sustainable business growth, job creation and greater global visibility for Ghanaian content.
