The European Union (EU) has officially launched the Sankofa II Project, a new initiative aimed at strengthening Ghana’s cultural heritage while expanding support to the country’s cultural and creative industries.
Speaking at the launch in Accra on Thursday, May 21, project lead Clara Pinet said the newly EU-funded project, implemented by Expertise France in Ghana, seeks to build on the successes of Sankofa I by widening its scope.
According to her, while the first phase focused solely on cultural heritage, Sankofa II has been designed to embrace a broader ecosystem that includes creative and cultural industries.
“This project aims at supporting the Ghana cultural ecosystem with a focus on cultural heritage and on cultural and creative industries,” she said.
Pinet explained that the expansion reflects a desire by both the European Union and France to deepen interventions in Ghana’s creative space and create stronger connections between heritage preservation and the wider creative economy.
She also highlighted the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) as the project’s primary beneficiary, stressing that one of the key objectives is to enhance institutional capacity through training and technical support.
“I believe that the actions that we are doing together are really important in terms of capacity building because we are noticing not a lack but maybe a need for support in terms of training in different thematics,” she stated.
Pinet further noted that documentation remains a critical issue within Ghana’s heritage space, describing it as an ongoing national conversation that requires attention and investment.
She added that the project’s planned use of virtual reality content could play an important role in preserving and promoting Ghana’s cultural assets.
“I believe that this action, along with activities around VR content, could really contribute to the preservation but also valorisation of Ghanaian cultural heritage sites here,” she said.
The Sankofa II Project is expected to create new opportunities for preserving Ghana’s rich heritage while supporting the growth and visibility of the country’s broader creative ecosystem.
