Nigerian comic skit maker and musician Nasboi has opened up about the emotional struggles that come with fame, disclosing that he suffers anxiety attacks almost every day.
Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV on Wednesday, May 27, Nasboi said the pressure of being in the public eye constantly affects his mental health.
“I do have anxiety attacks almost every day of my life. Most of the times I wake up, and my chest is very heavy. Like my chest is pounding. Has anybody said anything? You know, so it’s really crazy. It’s hard.”
According to him, many people fail to realise that celebrities are also human beings with emotions and mental struggles.
“Celebrities are actually human beings. Some people think celebrities have immunity, like maybe they don’t have blood flowing through them. That’s why they can say anything to you.”
Nasboi further explained that the constant pressure and public scrutiny often leave him emotionally drained and depressed.
“I always have too much pressure going on. That’s why I get depressed in the morning,” he added.
The entertainer also stated that many celebrities secretly battle depression because of the intense opinions and criticisms they receive from the public.
“A lot of celebrities are depressed. It’s not easy to be a celebrity. It’s not easy for people to have opinions on your life,” he said.
He noted that false stories and online discussions about celebrities can become overwhelming.
“You start seeing stuff that is not even true. You’re reading things about you and it did not even happen,” he lamented.
Speaking on how he has managed to survive in the entertainment industry over the years, Nasboi said he learned to become his own support system.
“I became my friend because I don’t have anybody who understands me perfectly. I had to start sitting with myself often. I had to start talking to myself. I had to reduce the pressure,” he explained.
He added that he constantly reminds himself not to sacrifice his well-being because life goes on regardless.
“If anything happens to you today, people will move on. You don’t really matter in the scale of things. So don’t kill yourself. Take it easy,” he advised.
