Nigerian Afrobeats star Davido has disclosed plans to repurchase his music masters from Sony Music before retiring from the music industry, stressing that ownership remains the most important aspect of any recording deal.
The award-winning singer, born David Adeleke, disclosed this during an appearance on The Long Form podcast, where he opened up about the business side of his music career and the long-term value of owning creative work.
According to Davido, although he currently enjoys a favourable music contract, reclaiming ownership of his catalogue is a personal priority he intends to achieve before stepping away from music.
“I have a good music contract. But the most important thing is ownership,” he said.
“I plan to get my master’s back. With that, I can give each of my kids songs even after I retire,” he added.
The singer explained that owning his masters would allow him to pass on his music catalogue to his children as part of his legacy.
Davido also used the opportunity to advise artistes to pay closer attention to the business side of the entertainment industry, noting that talent alone is not enough to secure long-term success.
His comments come amid growing conversations within the global music industry about artistes fighting for ownership and control of their music catalogues.

I’m getting the masters to all my songs from Sony soon, and with my 5 kids, I’m giving each of them songs they’ll keep earning royalties from even after I retire.”
