King of Accra’s claim that Sarkodie once paid him GHc 50 for doing making a beat for him, has raised critical issues.
One of such issues is why Ghanaian music producers do not earn royalties from the works they produce for musicians.
Ghana Weekend had an interview with Rex Omar, the Chairman for the Ghana Music Right Organisation (GHAMRO) and he gave reasons for this.
According to him, unlike the international practice, Ghanaian music producers and beat makers have always been concerned about charging huge sums of money from musicians for a song than charging them for studio time and negotiating for “points” from the music sales or royalties.
He added that for this to work in Ghana, the producers after going into a contract with the artiste, must notify GHAMRO of the engagement so that when they take royalties for the artistes, they can, per the contract share the royalties between them.
