Ghanaian comedienne Afia Schwarzenegger has said she makes a large percentage of her money from South Africa.
According to her, people do not appreciate Ghana comedians’ sense of humour the reason she makes more money from comedy in South Africa.
She was a guest on Citi TV’s Upside Down Show where she said she made money from comedy, emceeing shows, operating an advertising agency and a chop bar.
During the discussion, she was asked how comedy is doing. To this, she replied, “It’ll grow but with time. It’s not been easy as a stand-up comedian in Ghana especially a female as well.”
She, however, believes the situation is getting better compared to how it was years ago.
“This generation seems to be accepting it, unlike the previous generation. The previous generation saw comedy as an avenue to ridicule people. The painful part is that Nigerian comedian will make fun of a Ghanaian politician and we would laugh including that politician. Apart from me, any comedian should try it,” she said.
But as usual, she does not mind how people react to her jokes.
“So when I do a comedy with your name and you get angry over it, that’s your problem. However, it limits us. You offend people with any joke you crack…We don’t like anything that comes from Ghana…When I go do standup comedy outside Ghana, South Africa per se, they love me to bits. I make money from South Africa probably 80 per cent,” she disclosed.
