Robert Klah, the President of Dancers and DanceSport Association of Ghana (DDASPAG), has spoken about how difficult it is for dancers in Ghana to monetise their crafts on digital platforms.
Speaking on The Chat on Citi TV, Robert told the host, AJ Sarpong, that even though dancers play a very critical role in the entertainment industry, works they put out on digital platforms don’t earn them money.
According to the founder of Dancetera, because the dancers don’t own the songs they perform with, they do not earn money when they publish their works on these portals.
“These platforms that are enabling all the streaming and monetisations are not designed for dancers to make money off it, and that is the problem,” he noted.
“When it comes to the streams, the problem we have is that YouTube recognises fundamentally the music that you are using for your performance. There’s somebody who got over a million views and got 3 dollars because the algorithm focused on the music,” he said.
Ghanaian dancer Dancegod Lloyd, who was on the show, said due to this challenge, he decided to make his own music to complement his dance videos.
He also said other dancers team up with music producers who provide him with music for his dance productions.
