Renowned record engineer, Zapp Mallet, says he acquired the name ‘Zapp’ during his secondary education years in boarding school at Accra Academy.
Zapp Mallet who enrolled in the prestigious all-boys secondary school in the mid 1970s, made the disclosure on ‘Footprints’ with Samuel Atta-Mensah on Citi TV.
He said he was a fan of the American funk band known as ‘Zapp’ which was popular in the late 1970s.
According to him, Zapp became his nickname as a result of the intense interest he showed in the band and their music.

Zapp Mallet, born Emmanuel Mallet, is regarded as one of Ghana’s most accomplished music producers and a pioneer of Ghana’s hiplife genre.
Zapp Mallet had his secondary education at Accra Academy from 1975 to 1982 where he was a member of the school’s band, before entering the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study publishing skills for his bachelor’s degree.
For three times in a row, 1999, 2000, and 2001, Zapp Mallet was named ‘Producer of the Year’ at the Ghana Music Awards, making him the first and only recording engineer to achieve that.
