In a candid interview with Billboard, dancehall icon Vybz Kartel, born Adija Palmer, shared his thoughts on life behind bars, releasing music from prison, and the ever-evolving dancehall genre.

Despite his incarceration, Kartel has maintained his status as a global music force and a pioneer of dancehall’s transition into subgenres like Trap Dancehall.

Innovation Behind Bars

Kartel revealed how he continued releasing music during his time in prison, a feat that required creative problem-solving. Recording vocals with an iPad, he faced challenges such as the lack of proper acoustic treatment in his cell. Ingeniously, he used his mattress to reduce sound reflections and improve the quality of his recordings, demonstrating his dedication to his craft.

Freedom Street Concert and Ghana Connection

The dancehall superstar also spoke about his Freedom Street Concert held on January 1, reflecting on its success despite the interview being released after the event. Kartel highlighted his admiration for Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale, affirming a strong relationship between the two stars. This connection underscores the global impact of dancehall and its influence across continents.

Trap Dancehall and Grammy Recognition

Kartel delved into the evolution of dancehall, discussing the emergence of Trap Dancehall as a prominent subgenre. Acknowledging his role in shaping this new wave, he expressed pride in how far the genre has come.
He also touched on his recent Grammy nomination, a milestone he views with gratitude rather than surprise. As a trailblazer, Kartel’s recognition on such a global stage highlights dancehall’s growing influence in mainstream music.

Life Beyond Bars

The Jamaican artist revealed plans to perform at the UK’s Wireless Festival and is working on paperwork to secure entry into the United States. These developments could mark a significant shift in his career trajectory, allowing him to reconnect with international audiences.

Kartel also reflected on changes in the outside world, noting improvements in infrastructure like high-rise buildings and better roads. These observations underscored his realization of how life has evolved during his time away.

A New Chapter

When asked about his personal growth, Kartel admitted that the version of himself that went to jail was a “beast” but acknowledged that he has moved on from that phase. I don’t regret being him because he gave me fame, he said, but I’m in a better place now, and I like it. This introspection signals a renewed outlook on life, one that is focused on growth and positivity.

Vybz Kartel in Great Spirits

Overall, the interview painted a picture of a resilient and optimistic Vybz Kartel. Despite the challenges of incarceration, his influence on the music industry remains unmatched, and his ability to adapt and innovate continues to inspire fans worldwide.

Below is an excerpt from the interview, showcasing Kartel’s reflections on his journey and his hopes for the future.
