Grammy-winning artist, Burna Boy has cautioned fellow Nigerian musicians not to get carried away by popularity on social media platforms .
In an Instagram story on Tuesday April 8, he pointed out that trending on local polls or riding waves of fan hype might feel good, but it doesn’t mean much in the global music industry, especially when it comes to the bottom line.
He broke it down with some tough math: a million streams in Nigeria earns an artist just $300 to $400. That same million streams in the US, UK, or Europe? Try $3000 to $4000. It’s a staggering difference that highlights just how little local streaming success translates into real revenue.
“Being number one on Nigerian charts isn’t the flex people think it is,” Burna Boy emphasised, encouraging artists to think bigger. His advice?
Stop chasing local validation and start setting your sights on global success, or at least diversify with side hustles that actually pay. This is not hate, it’s tough love.”
