Award-winning playwright Latif Abubakar has launched his new stage play “Ghana Must Go” in Accra.
The play, which will be staged at the Accra International Conference Centre on May 24 and 25, is a theatrical performance and the flagship presentation of Big Push Ghana Project.
The piece is produced by Globe Productions in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“Ghana Must Go” is also a key component of the Black Star Experience under the Government of Ghana.
Speaking at the launch on Thursday, May 15, Abubakar emphasised the transformative potential of Ghana’s cultural and creative industries.
He described cultural dialogue as a “soft power engine” and a tool for economic growth, wrapped in artistic brilliance.
He urged Ghana to go beyond merely telling its stories through mediums like theatre and music, and instead focus on selling, protecting, and building industries around them.
Abubakar said: “Ghana Must Go is our cultural dialogue. A soft power engine and a vehicle of economic mobilisation wrapped in artistic brilliance. Ladies and gentlemen, let me say this clearly. Creativity is no longer just about passion.”
“It is about power, profits, and progress. If we truly believe in the power of our stories, we must do more than tell them. We must sell them, protect them, and build industries around them.”
Abubakar envisions Ghana becoming globally recognised not only for its traditional exports like cocoa but also for a thriving creative economy that generates joy, preserves cultural narratives, and boosts GDP.
He called for a move from potential to tangible economic outcomes, but stressed that this requires collective support to achieve.
“Ghana will not only be known for cocoa, gold and oil, but also for world-class theatre, globally acclaimed music and a thriving creative economy that generates joy, tells our stories and drives GDP growth.”
“Let us move from content to currency, from potential to profit and from dreams to economic reality. But to do this, we need your support,” Abubakar said.
