Outspoken Ghanaian media personality Afia Schwarzenegger has sparked a social media storm after sharing what appears to be a voice note message directed at acclaimed African-American filmmaker Tyler Perry, alerting him to the alleged illegal broadcast of his latest movie, Straw, in Ghana.
The Instagram screen recording, which has since gone viral within Ghanaian online circles, captures Afia’s familiar voice making a direct appeal to Perry, claiming that several unnamed Ghanaian media houses are unlawfully screening the film without permission.
In the viral clip, Afia introduces herself boldly, stating, “My name is Afia Schwarzenegger, I own Ghana,” before expressing gratitude to Tyler Perry for the new movie, Straw. She then moves on to inform him that his intellectual property is being exploited locally, adding that she can provide the names of the media platforms allegedly involved.
“I know the people who are showing it illegally, and I can give you their names,” Afia claims in the voice note.
While the video stops short of listing the accused outlets, her message has ignited a firestorm of reactions, ranging from praise for defending intellectual property rights to criticism for the dramatic tone and self-styled title as “owner of Ghana.”
As of now, there has been no official response from Tyler Perry or his production company regarding the voice note or the allegations. Perry, who is known for his fierce protection of creative ownership, has in the past taken strong legal action against copyright violations.
Afia Schwarzenegger’s message, though unconventional, highlights a pressing issue in Ghana’s entertainment industry, the unchecked piracy and unauthorised screening of foreign films. This practice not only infringes on copyright laws but also threatens international collaboration and respect for Ghana’s growing media landscape.
Industry experts are calling for a renewed crackdown on such practices.
“This should be a wake-up call,” said one Ghanaian film producer. “We must take copyright seriously if we want to be taken seriously by global creatives.”
Though delivered with Afia’s signature flair, her message touches on a legitimate concern. If true, the unauthorized showing of Straw underscores the need for stronger enforcement of copyright regulations in Ghana. As the clip continues to circulate, all eyes now turn to whether Tyler Perry will respond, and whether any legal actions will follow.
