British-Ghanaian rapper Stormzy, born Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., has been awarded an honorary Doctorate in Law by the University of Cambridge.
He received the honour on Wednesday, June 25, for his transformative contributions to education through the Stormzy Scholarship.
The programme, launched in 2018 via his #Merky Foundation in partnership with HSBC UK, funds tuition and living costs for Black British students. It has enabled 56 undergraduates to attend Cambridge, with 12 supported annually since 2021.
The “Stormzy Effect” drove a 131% increase in Black student admissions in 2022, with 141 enrolled, as applications from Black students nationwide surged. Stormzy’s broader philanthropy includes #Merky Books, which supports Black authors, and Merky FC, promoting racial equity in football through job opportunities. The 2024 opening of Merky FC HQ in Croydon further advances this mission.
This marks his second honorary degree, following one from the University of Exeter in 2022.
The ceremony, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Prentice, honored Stormzy alongside figures such as Angela Davis and Dame Katherine Grainger.
