Ghanaian comedian and skit maker MJtheComedian has shared a touching story about how one of his comedy videos saved a fan who was on the verge of taking his own life.
Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM’s Showbiz A-Z on Saturday October 11, MJtheComedian said skit-making goes beyond entertainment — it also serves as a form of therapy for many people dealing with life’s struggles.
“A gentleman nearly committed suicide. He once texted me that he needed to meet me,” he recounted.
According to MJtheComedian, the man invited him to a restaurant and asked him to order anything he wanted. Later, he sent the comedian a heartfelt message explaining how one of his videos gave him a reason to live.
Part of the message read:
“Sometime last year, I was going through a lot. I had a child and was struggling with mental challenges and child support issues. It was too much for a young man like me, so I decided to end it all. That afternoon, I bought a drug to take and die in my sleep. While scrolling through my phone one last time, I came across your video. I didn’t even know you. I watched it, and for the first time in a very long while, I laughed. That laughter changed everything. I threw the medicine away and kept watching your videos. Your work saved my life. I owe you a great debt.”
The comedian said the encounter deeply moved him and reinforced his belief in the healing power of comedy.
“That message changed how I see what I do. It made me realize that comedy is more than just making people laugh — it’s about giving hope,” he said.
MJtheComedian, who has become one of Ghana’s most recognized online comedians, is known for his relatable and hilarious skits on social media. He has performed on major stages including Laughline, Comedy Express, Lord of the Ribs, and Night of 1027 Laughs. He is also the founder of the annual Dashiki Festival, celebrating African culture and creativity.
