Award-winning Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has announced that he is officially joining the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), marking a major milestone in his media career.
Asediba made the revelation during an interview with veteran broadcaster Kafui Dey on December 31.
When asked about his next move following his exit from Media General, the investigative journalist disclosed that he will be working with the BBC’s Focus on Africa team.
“You really want me to say that?” Asediba asked jokingly before confirming, “So I’m officially joining the BBC now. I’m going to be with the Focus on Africa team. This is actually the first place I’m saying this.”
He revealed that he secured the role even before winning his recent Komla Dumor journalism award, noting that the recognition only further validated the BBC’s decision. According to him, he applied for the job and the award almost simultaneously, undergoing separate interview processes conducted by different panels.
“I applied for the job, and about two weeks later, I applied for the award as well,” he explained. “So while I was going through the interview process for the job, I was also being assessed for the award. When the results came in and they realised it was the same person, they were like, ‘Who is this guy?’”
Asediba indicated that his role with the BBC will involve working between Nairobi and London, describing the opportunity as a long-held dream and a natural progression in his career.
“It’s always been the dream to walk through Komla’s path because I believe he left a legacy,” he said, referencing the late Ghanaian journalist Komla Dumor. “I’m looking forward to doing that as well.”
Reflecting on his journey, Asediba admitted that the move comes at a point where he felt ready for a new challenge after achieving significant milestones locally.
“When you win all the major awards, you begin to ask yourself, ‘What next?’” he noted. “I feel like this is the next step, the next journey, to penetrate the international space.”
Asediba’s move to the BBC has been widely welcomed by colleagues and industry observers, who see it as another strong representation of Ghanaian journalism on the global stage.
