Artist and founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art, Ibrahim Mahama has stated that he is considering legal action against the Police’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as the Black Maria, over an alleged assault in Tamale.
Speaking at a press conference on Monday, March 23, Mahama said pursuing the case is necessary not just for himself but to protect ordinary citizens from similar incidents.
“Certainly, we are considering legal action. It’s very important. It’s a no-brainer. We have to do it.
“It’s not for me, but it’s actually for everyone else because if this could happen to me, as well-known as I am, then what about the people on the street? Who’s going to speak for that person? So, we have to do it for the benefit of the collective society that we’re in.”
He stated that the encounter left him seriously injured, forcing him to cancel several international engagements, including trips to the UK and Europe.
Mahama further alleged that the incident reflects a pattern of abuse by the unit, warning that such actions could discourage young people from contributing to national development.
The Black Maria team has denied the allegations, stating the incident occurred during a traffic enforcement operation involving a non-compliant driver. The unit also released a video related to the incident, but Mahama dismissed it as manipulated.
He insisted that the matter would not be overlooked.
