Milk-Crate Challenge: What you need to know about the latest social media craze

Challenges are not new to the dynamics that shape the experience on social media. Over the years we have witnessed all sorts of challenges that have created awareness to support a cause, entertain or raise eyebrows.

Whether it’s the Ice Bucket Challenge, flipping a bottle, or Flip the Switch Challenge— there’s something about the inherent virality of everyone trying to achieve the same goal that makes us feel interconnected.

The latest to join the list of viral social media challenges is the Milk Crate Challenge.

The viral challenge which started on Tiktok in Atlanta, Georgia– see participants attempting to ascend a rickety pyramid of stacked milk crates— with the highest crate in the middle– gradually descend on the other side in an attempt to successfully complete the challenge.

Be it on concrete, dirt, or grass, competitors are tasked with scaling the crates successfully.

It has since moved away from being a challenge of “balance” to an avenue for spectators to cast lots and stake bets.

This has left some people hurt in the process. Videos posted on social media show people falling in awkward positions, including on the backs, arms, and necks. No deaths as a result of an awkward fall, have been recorded yet.

However, with a number of successful attempts, the huge number of recorded fails have not deterred people from trying the challenge; as there are thousands of videos and photos posted under the hashtag on Instagram and Twitter.

Who or what sparked the current craze is far from clear.

According to the-sun dot com, Sir Veillance Studios, a multimedia production business, appears to have been one of the first to post footage of the challenge.

This new craze already has amassed more than 15.3 million views on TikTok.

Below are examples of some successful and failed attempts of the latest challenge.

Now that you have made it to this part of the post if you are in Africa and you are thinking of trying this challenge, please do yourself and your family members a big favor and do not do it. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood.
